On January 14, President-elect Joe Biden announced the first step in his two-step rescue plan. The plan is a vast $1.9 trillion package—we’ve highlighted specific provisions that will impact the food system and the restaurant industry below.
On Thursday, February 4, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed an amendment to the budget resolution, calling for direct relief to the restaurant industry in a 90-10 vote. The language did not include a specific amount of relief, but reports are indicating it will be include $25 billion. The plan proposes:
According to reporting from Politico, the House has adopted budget measures which would allow the package to pass via budget reconciliation by March 14. The plan may not pass as currently outlined due to budget rules around reconciliation.
