On Friday, February 5, Senators Roger Wicker and Kyrsten Sinema and representatives Earl Blumenauer and Brian Fitzpatrick formally reintroduced the bipartisan RESTAURANTS Act. This followed the overwhelming bipartisan support for direct relief to restaurants in the Biden Administration’s American Relief Plan (more on that here).
According to the January jobs report, 19,000 people who work in restaurants and bars lost their jobs that month despite overall employment gains in other sectors. Nearly 2.5 million industry professionals have lost their jobs since the start of the pandemic.
The 2021 RESTAURANTS Act is similar to the bill of the same name which was introduced last year. Some key points include:
