These are stressful and difficult times. The COVID-19 pandemic has put tremendous economic and mental pressure on our industry and further exposed societal inequities across our country. The partisan discourse in Washington, D.C. has only compounded these pressures, making a focus on our common good and national solutions challenging.

November 4 marked one of the most significant elections of our lifetime. Record numbers of people voted across the country, making their voices heard and ultimately deciding that there will be a new President in the White House in January 2021. As the results are finalized, the stakes for our community remain just as high—our country needs another COVID stimulus package and that package must include relief for the restaurant community.

As the Biden Administration identifies new leadership that will focus on COVID relief—as well as efforts around food and agriculture—we will be monitoring and advocating for policies that assist the people and communities that comprise an equitable food system and restaurant industry. We feel hopeful that under this new administration, the health and economic crises created by COVID will drive a renewed focus on how the federal government supports our nation.

What does this mean for the Restaurant Relief Act? As we enter the “lame duck” session of this Congress, there will be another attempt to get COVID relief out to the country. We believe that Senate Republicans will work towards a smaller package, but possibly bigger than what they had originally proposed. And while the Restaurant Relief Act has bi-partisan support, it remains unknown if it will make it into whatever stimulus package gets finalized.

Our thanks go out to the restaurant community for all that you have done to help support individuals and the industry in these challenging times, including advocating for these important policies and getting the vote out! Please know we will do everything we can to make sure that Congress continues to prioritize the Restaurant Relief Act and will keep you posted at every step of the way.
